Participate in the 2023 Student Outcomes Survey to Improve Your Vocational Education Experience

The 2023 Student Outcomes Survey is now open, providing an opportunity for vocational education and training (VET) students to share their experiences and contribute to improving the quality and relevance of their training. This annual survey collects valuable information on students’ reasons for training, employment outcomes, satisfaction with activity, and further study outcomes. By participating in the survey, students can help shape the future of VET in Australia. Read on to learn more about the study and how to get involved.

What is the 2023 Student Outcomes Survey?

The 2023 Student Outcomes Survey, conducted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), aims to enhance VET students’ social and economic outcomes. The survey gathers data on various aspects, including reasons for training, employment outcomes, training satisfaction, and benefits of the training. It helps training providers and policymakers make informed decisions to improve the quality and effectiveness of vocational training in Australia.

Who Conducts the Survey?

The survey is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and managed by NCVER. The Social Research Centre (SRC), a national social research company, is responsible for surveying on behalf of NCVER.

Why is the Survey Conducted?

The primary goal of the 2023 Student Outcomes Survey is to improve the social and economic outcomes of VET students. By understanding the reasons behind students’ training choices and assessing their employment outcomes and satisfaction levels, the survey enables policymakers and training providers to identify areas for improvement and ensure that vocational training aligns with the needs of Australian workplaces.

What Information is Collected?

The survey collects information on students’ reasons for training, employment outcomes, satisfaction with training, benefits of the movement, and further study outcomes. The data collected is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the VET system and inform policy decisions.

Who Can Participate and When?

The survey includes various student groups, such as qualification completers, qualification part-completers, short course completers, short course part-completers, and subject(s) only completers. Students who completed a VET qualification, program, or topic in 2022 may receive an invitation to participate in the survey. The survey cycle begins in March and consists of three main stages:

  • Project preparation
  • Fieldwork
  • Data Analysis
  • Reporting

Fieldwork takes place from June to August, during which personalised survey invitations are sent via email, SMS, or hard-copy letter, depending on the availability of contact details. The survey closes in mid-August 2023.

How Can I Participate?

To participate in the 2023 Student Outcomes Survey, students can visit the survey website at www.ncver.edu.au/sos/login and enter the login code provided in their survey invitation. The survey can be completed online or through a telephone interview.

Why Should I Participate?

Participating in the Student Outcomes Survey gives students a voice in shaping the future of vocational education. By sharing their experiences and insights, students contribute to improving the quality and relevance of training programs. The survey results help training providers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders identify areas for improvement, enhance training outcomes, and support students in making informed decisions about their education and career paths.

Survey Results and Access to Information

Once the survey is complete, the results will be available on the NCVER Portal. Training providers can receive individual reports on employment outcomes, training satisfaction, perceived benefits, and relevance of training as reported by their domestic students. The aggregate results of the survey are also published in various publications, providing valuable information to the general public.
